About bikeshare

Features of a bike share system

Bikeshare systems offer a convenient mobility option for short trips. A fully automated locking system allows a user to check out a cycle using a smart card or phone and return it to any other station. The bicycles are robust, ergonomic, and specially designed for bikeshare. The cycles have step-through frames and adjustable seats, making it easy for anyone to use the system.

A dense network of stations across a defined coverage area makes it easy for users to find cycles. Bikeshare system employees maintain an even distribution of bikes across the system by moving bikes between stations based on demand. Real-time user information is provided through various platforms, including web, mobile phones, and on-site terminals.

Benefits of bikeshare

Easy availability to bikes will reduce commute times, increase flexibility, and improve access to employment, educational, and recreational opportunities in Addis Ababa while also reducing household travel costs. Bisiklet Megarat stations will be located in convenient locations, close to bus terminals, LRT and BRT stations, and commercial hubs.

Cycling is a healthy way to commute that can lead to improved fitness. Cycling is a good form of cardiovascular exercise and contributes to mental health and productivity. Cyclists will avoid traffic delays and the hassle of finding a parking space. New users will be able to give cycling a try without making a commitment to buy and maintain a bicycle. The system will also create employment opportunities through the planning, installation, operation, and management of the bikeshare system.

Bisiklet Megarat will also support the transformation to safer streets, where pedestrians and bicyclists feel safe and comfortable. Streets in the coverage area will be transformed through the introduction of protected bike lanes. Having more cyclists encourages motorists to be conscious of other road users and share the road.

Bisiklet Megarat coverage area

In its first phase, Bisiklet Megarat will serve areas in the city centre, such as Mexico, Leghare, Stadium, Meskel Square, Bole, Hayahulet, Kazanchis, Urael, Atlas, British Embassy, Filwoha, and Post Office. The system will begin with 500 cycles and will be expanded in future phases to accommodate 10,000 cycles across Addis Ababa.
